Interior Design is Good for Mental Health
So why do we buy Home Decor Magazines? To “read” them? NO. To look at the beautiful pictures! They use them to prey on us, giving us endless eye candy that none can resist and perpetuating dreams untold for decades.
What is the #1 Secret Home Decor Magazines know that you may not?
All Home Decor Magazines’s like Veranda, House Beautiful, and Southern Home know that all of us has a story of both joy and pain in our lives and that we are constantly creating a balance between the two. They know that you deal with yours by pursuing beauty of some kind. Think about the ways you might be doing this. Maybe you like beautiful outdoor scenery and go hiking every chance you get. Maybe you collect Art. Maybe you can’t live without your airpods filling your head with beautiful music. They’ve definitely got MY number. Because YES, I have dealt with my pain by creating beautiful spaces for me and my family to live and grow and heal in. You will see and hear this often in my practice as an Interior Designer and Creative:
“Beauty in the Home is an Elixir to the Soul.” -Moi
In the book Captivating, by Stasi Eldridge, beauty is described as an innate part of what we were designed to experience: “...beauty is in and of itself a great and glorious good, something we need in large and daily doses.”

Elle-The-Home-Bird does a fantastic job perpetuating dreams and healing home decor settings. I get lost in her images and videos on insta every time.
Beauty has a tremendous impact on mental health: How many times have you been suffering from some mental reverie of sadness, mundane living, or stress only to experience those negative emotions dissipate in the moment of beholding a gorgeous view? So why not experience that in the daily doses in your home? Research shows that our burdens are much easier to bear when the home is aesthetically appealing, orderly, and has an abundance of natural elements, such as plants and flowers. One of the most thorough articles on this topic is The Impact of Interior Design on your Mental Health.
The soul sisters of Mood and Color can also drive our chi. They are well paired and painted by ColorPsychology.org. Here you can find an in depth analysis of the emotional impacts of various color groups and shades. It is hard to argue that “...color is vital to the human experience. Through color we feel, we communicate, we heal.”
The Importance of Art and Beauty in Healing also talks about the significant emotional and psychological impact your surroundings have upon you: “Beauty not only appeals to your senses, but it also nourishes your soul. While it can be stimulating, it heals with comfort. Along with your soul, your heart, mind, and body responds positively to beauty.”
Still doubt it? Read Interior Design Alleviates Depression and Anxiety. Beauty every day keeps the doctor away! And that’s enough homework for today.
Beauty is something I have always craved like water (not an overstatement), and I just have to keep making it!
Why spend money on home decor?
Beautiful interiors are linked to success: A beautiful home can make you more successful, support you in fulfilling your own purpose, and give the peace and order you need to remove many ordinary stressors from your days. That’s why those multi-purpose and functional spaces need to be beautiful, too. You’ll rarely find an issue without a dreamy study or laundry room in it. A beautiful home undergirds you on your journey through life while providing a platform for holding dear the sentimental pieces of your past. How important is that?
To recap: It has been proven that beauty gives the gift of healing, provides peace, and supports us in all of our endeavors through good and bad seasons. These are the root of our cravings and the food the HDM’s provide until we can make our own. Stasi Eldridge continues to build her case in her book, Captivating: “Beauty is transcendent…[it] reminds us of an Eden we have never known, but somehow our hearts were created for.”
In other words, you need it to thrive, to succeed, to grow and to rest, all vital aspects of living a fulfilling, peaceful and productive life. There is no price you can put on that. So read those Home Decor Magazine’s and go make something beautiful!
