Elegant Bosque Library and Dining
In Phase 2 of working in this royally inspired suburban home in McKinney, Texas, we perpetuated our penchant for novelty into the formal spaces that lead the way into Phase I, The Brass Forest Kitchen.
At LGI, we take seriously the art of discerning who our clients are, what they love, and why—prioritizing this over design trends.
Jorge is a brilliant and studious reader with a vast collection of book titles on an expansive array of topics, including ancient philosophy, history and culture, war, politics, science, and Near Eastern religion.
Allison is a woman of grace and class in appearance, taste, and demeanor, with a caring and easygoing approach to life. She has played star roles in musical theatre productions and also loves symphony orchestras and antiques.
Their interests intersect in their pursuit of nature and outdoor experiences, quaint atmospheric establishments, and great coffee.
The client dreamed of a showstopping living room—novel, formal, yet cozy and casual. To accomplish this, we cleverly curated elements from a mix of styles. While grounding the space in the clients’ traditional taste, we also borrowed Art Deco and Bombay elements, creating an eclectic mix that features the most elegant aspects of nature.
The Woodwork
We began by taking two separate untrimmed bookcases and bringing them together by retrofitting a custom-designed center column of adjustable shelving and uniting the three sections with substantial crown molding. The entire unit was stained to match and affixed to the wall as if built-in.
Then we designed Deco frame molding for the upper back wall, borrowing style from the owners’ much-loved Art Deco standing lamp.
The Paint
We intentionally chose a subtle Soft Sage paint from Sherwin Williams’ Designer Collection for the three adjacent walls surrounding the living room to provide a nature-inspired backdrop for our respective selections, such as the Garden Penrose rug from Unique Loom and the botanical Lottie Blues chair fabric by Magnolia Fabrics.
The color facilitates an undisruptive transition to the adjacent neutral beige walls, making it a more affordable option than repainting all the connected areas. To further preserve cohesion, we chose to leave the white trim paint throughout, making an exception for the dining room.
The Furniture
The client already owned two chairs of similar scale that we pulled from other areas of the home—one a casual club chair, and the other, an antique chair formally trimmed in wood. Both were upholstered in the same fabric to create an eclectic pair of lounge chairs.
We selected a casual dark navy and white canvas striped bench with Bombay legs from Uttermost to add a dynamic but informal element to the space, completing the ensemble with an unexpected twist. It’s this kind of selection that prevents spaces from looking like you hired a designer and instead makes it appear personally curated from family treasure troves or travels far and wide.
Lastly, we perfectly balanced the space with the exotic Art Deco Azul Chandelier, shooting its magical light upward and downward at just the right height to create a cozy canopy for the ground elements while breathing light and warmth into the open-air second story.
We lovingly restored the clients’ sentimental antique dining table, worked with the transitional chandelier, and respected the recently purchased and much-loved rug. Only a couple of simple changes elevated the space to a whimsical bosque wonderland: first, our custom-installed wainscoting and chair rail, bathed in Sherwin Williams Soft Sage drawn from the semi-distant living room walls; and second, the stunning Ottoline Wallpaper Mural from The Painted Paper Company—classic and timeless, yet right on trend.

"My taste leans traditional and antique, which isn’t exactly what’s trending right now, but Liz completely embraced my vision. One of the most impressive things she did was take my eclectic mix of artwork, photos, and collectibles and arrange them in a way I never could have imagined."
